Because of the never-ending construction. Sarah Winchester was told by a psychic that she was haunted by spirits and that she should move to California and build a house. The construction of the house is said to have cost her $1.5 million per year and many people estimate the total cost to be in the hundreds of millions.
The entire construction didn't have much of a floor plan, as the primary objective was to build and never stop. This caused the house to be built somewhat like a maze with stairs that lead nowhere among other oddities not found in a traditional home.
Who is Sarah Winchester?
Sarah was married to William Wirt Winchester, In 1862, William joined his father's company. Soon afterward, he took over the company.
The company manufactured the Winchester Rifle that was later famous as the "Gun That Won The West." It was one of the most popular rifles in American history. Millions were sold and many lives were lost due to it.
Sarah believed that she was haunted by the spirits of those killed by Winchester rifles. The house is said to be overflowing with thousands of photographs and objects that once belonged to the Winchester family. There are also many guns and many clocks. She died at the age of 83. Since her death, the amount of reported paranormal activity inside the house has increased.

Winchester heiress Sarah Winchester would turn this house into something made of myths and legends. Paranoid that she was being haunted by the spirits of those who have died because of her family's rife empire, Sarah began building her mansion in an attempt to confuse the spirits.
This spiral of madness would last for more than three decades and leave behind a historical landmark unlike any other. The construction began in 1884 and lasted for 38 years before being completed in 1922, the same year Sarah died.
