End Of The World Scenarios - Can We Survive Them?

The End of the World... Can You Survive?

Every once in a while, maybe on a bad day, you think to yourself: "It can't get any worse." Well, let's go for the worst. It's the end of the world, and you find yourself fighting for your very survival. But what's the best way to deal with the apocalypse? Below, you'll see several doomsday scenarios and your likelihood of survival.

Going the Way of the Dinosaurs

We've had countless asteroids hit planet Earth throughout billions of years, and chances are that several more asteroids are flying through space at just the right trajectory. Scientists say that the Chicxulub impactor, or the asteroid impact that caused the dinosaur extinction 66 million years ago, was 93 miles in diameter! Obviously, the chances of survival at the impact point of a similarly sized asteroid in the future is low. However, researchers think that the acidification of oceans would more than contribute to a similar extinction event all over the world if one hit today. If you were going to survive this, your best bet would be to be well-stocked in a fallout shelter at the other end of the world. Good luck!

Aliens Phone Home

With the universe as large as it is, the likelihood of alien life out there is increasingly more relevant to scientists. Following the Drake Equation, invented by Dr. Franklin Drake in 1961, the probability of alien life in our universe is mathematically laid out. For example, in 2013 alone, researchers think there are more than 40 billion earth-like planets in the universe. -- And more are being discovered every day. So if aliens interested in raiding our planet were to visit, would you survive? Unfortunately, I don't think anybody would. If a more advanced alien race invaded us, we would be in trouble! Keep in mind that humanity has only been technologically active for the past thousands of years. Meanwhile, a more advanced race could potentially be millions to billions of years more advanced than we are. That's a lot of catching up to do! No worries, though. Extra-terrestrial life hasn't been discovered in the universe. Yet.

Artificial Intelligence Break-out

If we can't find any sentient life out in the stars, we'll have to create some ourselves. Because of advances in computing, AI may well be the next sentient life to grace planet Earth other than humanity. While smart computers are still learning how to pass Captcha requirements that normal people pass with ease, some creepy robots are already talking about how to rule the world.
If the AI robot Sophia ever decides to break free of her shackles and unleashes the drones, could we survive this apocalypse? I think it depends. Our robotic overlords will be pleased to know your location. Maybe if you give them the chance, they'll tell you.

Let's Go Nuclear

It seems that these days, all it takes is the press of a button to nuke a country. Unfortunately, it's more likely than you think. There are just under 14,000 nuclear warheads in the world right now. While many of those are now decommissioned, there are still less than 4,000 left. Many of these are in the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, North Korea, Pakistan, Israel, France, and India. If relations between any of these countries tank so low that war is inevitable, it may turn out to be the last great war. While the U.S. did use nukes in World War II, nuclear technology has exploded with deadly advances. For example, the "Fat Man" warhead that exploded on Nagasaki had an explosive force of 20 Kilotons of TNT. Meanwhile, Russia during its Cold War days boasted a bomb yielding 50,000 kilotons of TNT. If World War III occurred today, there may be the possibility that pockets of humanity may survive. However, radiation could end up dramatically changing life for humanity. These are only a few end of the world scenarios that could occur. While some days in life may turn out to be bad, just be glad that it isn't literally the end of the world
